The Outskirter's Secret (Steerswoman Series book 2)by Rosemary KirsteinThis is the second of the epic Steerswoman series. Though the novel is large it's not as large as some epic fantasy, but the scope of the world building is quite epic. A dystopic world of magic and technology twined together by forgotten knowledge and a strange new world that seems to have emerged after a disaster that took away the moon. This, the second in the series of Steerswoman takes the reader into the Outskirts where strange and deadly creature dwell; in search of answers to the secret of the gems that might have come from a fallen Guidestar.
Somewhere in the dangerous land lies the answer to a question that has put Rowan and her friend Bel in danger. Now Rowan will travel with Bel to Bel's part of the world in hopes of answers and a chance to add to her knowledge base. As a steerswoman she seeks knowledge and truth and must also impart this to anyone asking of her as long as they agree to answer her questions. Where she's dwelled before, steerswomen are well known and revered for this; but in the outskirts she may have to prove her worth. Every day she has new knowledge and new misgivings about the Outskirters; the people of her friend Bel.
This novel answers a few questions from the first novel and adds yet more so that the reader is compelled to continue the series.
One interesting and well crafted part of this story involves a character that Rosemary Kirstein manages to withhold information about; in such a crafty manner that it doesn't matter that the reader is a slight bit misled, because she uses it to show how different the culture is on this world and how much two cultures of the world differ from one another. The outcome is predictable and yet startling all at the same time while leaving at least one character stunned.
Once again this is a superbly well written novel that is well paced while it weaves a strange and dangerous world around such well crafted complex characters.
Lovers of SFF and paranormal should love this; although the magic most often looks like technology that's been forgotten, there are many creatures of paranormal nature that show up throughout.
I'm looking forward to the third book though a bit leery that there might be two more after that.

This is my favorite fantasy/sci fi series (4 books, so far) of the year. Strong, smart, sensible women leads, creative storyline, plot surprises, & excellent writing combine to produce a great, yet unfinished series. I am so looking forward to the next book!
The steerswoman series is a masterpiece. The whole is wonderful, and full of small details, detailed characters and different cultures.
Also all the storyline is great, full of intricacies and unexpected happenings. I loved it all.
I am still anxiously awaiting for the fifth and last book to finish the overall storyline, but each book is selfconclusive and does not leave too many cliffhangers.
in 1990 I ran into a great book, for years I watched for the sequel. Finally now decades later I get to read not just he sequel but the next three books. As a avid reader (SF/Fantasy/Gamer) must recommend you read at least the first book. Rosemary please get to the end for us! But keep up the good work. The world created is wonderful and exciting. The consistent background fully fleshed and three dimensionally complete. Filling out the gaps on my own is wonderful. Trying to imagine how they got there is enjoyment in itself. A truly fascinating book, filled with intelligent characters trying to figure out the rules of the strange world in which they live. Why are the Outskirts so inimical to life? And how do the Outskirter tribes survive regardless? How have things changed over time? And how to the Wizards and Guidestars fit in? I really enjoyed trying to put all the pieces together. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
The continuation did not disappoint! More wonderful storytelling. The second half even more riveting.the characters are so real it’s hard not to see and hear them. Going to get book 3 now!
This is a very interesting series of books. This book is very different than the first book in the series and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are unique and intriguing. Started reading book one on vacation and couldn't put it down. I am now on the third book. Each book encompasses a different environment with new characters yet they are all tied together. This seems to keep each book fresh and not redundant.
This second book in the series really nailed it - the world-building was incredible. Rowan and Bel continue to be a great combination of logic and action. The steerswoman's life of asking and answering questions and putting the big picture together in her head... the understanding she builds from a myriad of separate bits of information and observation... the culture she adapts to and adopts... I just can't say enough about this book! I would say Kirstein's work has become some of my favorite fiction. If you enjoy reading that makes you think, with hidden meaning behind the words, then you will definitely want this book! Worth every penny, and then some!
